Do you have crooked teeth?

Are you conscious of them?

Do you want to straighten your teeth?

Well, you have come to the right place. In this article, we will learn all about different teeth straightening options you can choose from to tame your crooked teeth.

Teeth Straightening Options

Here are the non-surgical as well as surgical teeth alignment options.

Non-Surgical Options

1.     Metal Braces

These are the most common types of braces used for teeth straightening, especially for kids and teens.

Fixed metal braces are attached to the teeth with brackets, flexible wire, and bands. The wire has to be adjusted at regular intervals throughout the treatment to gradually align your teeth.

Metal braces have gotten much smaller than what it was in the yesteryears. Kids often choose colourful bands to make braces fun and stylish.

2.     Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are ideal for those looking for a less obvious option as compared to metal braces. These braces have tooth-coloured or clear brackets that don’t stand out and the wire colour is optional.

They function the same way as the metal braces but are more prone to staining and breakage as compared to metal brackets.

They are suitable for kids, teens and adults alike.

3.     Lingual Braces

Amongst the braces, these are the ‘invisible’ ones because they are fitted behind the teeth instead of the front.

They are suitable for adults as caring for them can be too complicated for kids and teens. While they aren’t visible, they can be quite uncomfortable and they are harder to get used to.

It may impact speech and eating more than regular braces.

4.     Clear Aligners

If you are looking for teeth straightening without braces, go for clear aligners.

These are the most comfortable option when it comes to non-surgical options. Moreover, they are a removable option.

Clear aligners are transparent trays that are custom-made to fit your mouth. They apply consistent pressure on the teeth to bring the teeth back to their correct positions. They need to be changed twice in a month and worn consistently to get the desired results.

These are meant for teens and adults only and is not suitable for children. They are also not suitable for those with severe orthodontic misalignment.

Surgical Options

If you want to go down the surgical route to correct your smile, you have the following options. The surgical options are strictly for adults.

1.     Teeth-straightening surgery

In this surgery, the orthodontist will perform a procedure that is designed to realign your jaw. The surgery repositions the bones and gums that hold your teeth in place.

Also known as orthognathic surgery, it may be recommended if your teeth affect your speech or chewing ability.

2.     Cosmetic Contouring

If your teeth are not necessarily crooked but slightly misshapen, you can consider cosmetic contouring.

Also known as cosmetic reshaping, in this procedure the dentist alters the shape and length of the teeth. This is mostly done to give you a more cosmetic appealing look. The dentist sculpts the teeth and once the desired shape is achieved, the teeth are polished.
